Pre-Trek Preparation
- Book Early. National Park permits must be secured in advance via the e-Rinjani system. Book at least 1–2 months before arrival to ensure availability.
- Physical Training. Focus on stair training (300–500 steps) and leg strength (squats, lunges) at least 4–8 weeks prior. The ascent involves gaining over 1,800m in a single day, which is physically demanding for beginners.
- Acclimatize. Spend at least one night in Senaru Village (601m) before starting your trek to help your body adjust to the altitude and prevent early fatigue.
Essential Packing Checklist
- Footwear. Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip. The volcanic terrain is often loose and sandy.
- Clothing. Temperatures at the rim can drop to 0–5°C at night. Pack a warm windproof jacket, thermal layers (Heat Tech), gloves, and a beanie.
- Gear. A reliable headlamp is essential for navigating in the dark if you arrive late or for early morning views. Trekking poles are strongly advised to reduce knee strain during the long 5-hour descent.
- Personal Hygiene. Bring hand sanitizer, wet wipes, and toilet paper, as facilities on the mountain are extremely basic.
On the Trail Tips
- Pace Yourself. “Slow and steady” is the best approach. Take short breaks every 30–45 minutes and drink water frequently to prevent altitude-related headaches.
- Hydration and Energy. Bring your personal high-energy snacks ( Nuts, chocolate, or energy bars for quick boosts )
- Leave No Trace. Mount Rinjani faces significant litter issues. Carry a small trash bag for your own waste and support operators who follow zero-waste practices
